Mike Soucie is Nelnet’s 2026 Butterfield Leadership Award Winner

Creating an awesome work environment By Susie McCormick August 3, 2026

Some leaders leave a mark through what they accomplish. The best ones leave a mark through how they make people feel — seen, supported, and capable of more than they thought possible. Mike Soucie, Chief Financial Officer of Nelnet Financial Services, is that kind of leader.

This year, Nelnet is proud to recognize Mike as the 2026 recipient of the Steve Butterfield Award for Excellence in Leadership.

About the Butterfield Award

Named for Nelnet co-founder Steve Butterfield, the award honors a Nelnet leader at the director level or above who reflects the qualities that defined Steve’s legacy:

  • Service – A customer-focused leader who goes out of their way to take care of others.
  • People – An influential leader who develops associates and builds culture.
  • Humility – A servant leader who puts the team first.
  • Vision – An inspiring leader who dreams big and pursues bold goals.
  • Innovation – A change-embracing leader who turns obstacles into opportunity.

It recognizes leaders who advance the business while bringing out the best in others — and it is one of the most meaningful honors Nelnet bestows each year.

Leading With Humility, Heart, and Vision

After more than 20 years with Nelnet Financial Services, Mike stepped into his role as Chief Financial Officer with honesty, courage, and a forward-looking mindset. Colleagues describe him as someone who invests in people, encourages growth, shares perspective openly, and helps others feel supported and capable. His leadership has made an impact not only through results, but through the way he consistently shows up for the people around him.

Mike is one of those leaders who makes you better without ever making it about himself. He's always willing to share an idea, ask a thoughtful question, or challenge you to think a little differently, and you walk away better because of it. He believes in people, he believes in Nelnet, and he's constantly looking for ways to help both reach their full potential. I've learned so much from him over the years, and I know I'm just one of many people who can say that.

Associate Experience

Along the way, Mike has earned a reputation as a trusted mentor — someone who creates space for others to succeed and brings energy and heart to the workplace every day. Those qualities make him a fitting recipient of an award that celebrates leadership rooted in excellence and genuine care for others.

In His Own Words

When the award was announced, Mike’s first instinct was to look for his family in the crowd.

My family was there, and they are my ‘why.’ I wanted to share that moment with them. I knew Butter, and I know the prior winners really well — they are truly remarkable leaders and human beings. There are so many people who contribute to making Nelnet an amazing place to work, and part of me felt undeserving.

For Mike, the recognition carries meaning beyond the individual honor. “Nelnet is full of some of the smartest people I’ve ever met. I truly believe we have the ability to solve any problem or obstacle put in our way,” he says. “To be recognized is to acknowledge that the company values our ability as leaders to build culture and show up every day. It’s really a team award, built on the success and failure of a group of people working together to make the world better.”
